Kristen Veal
Once one of the country’s most talented young players, Kristen Veal is now one of Australia’s most promising young coaches.
An integral member of the famous AIS team of teenagers that took the league by storm to win the WNBL championship in 1988-99, Veal was drafted to the Phoenix Mercury with Pick 13 in the 2001 draft.
A triple WNBL champion with the Canberra Capitals, Veal rose to the big occasion and was named Grand Final MVP (now known as the Rachael Sporn Medal in 1999-2000.
A superb domestic career stretched 372 games.
Veal’s journey would come full circle when decades later she’d return to the AIS as head coach of the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence women’s program head coach and mentor the next generation of young Aussie stars including Jade Melbourne, Shaneice Swain, Isobel Borlase, Nyadiew Pouch and Dallas Loughridge.
She served as an assistant coach to two-time championship coach Paul Goriss before she took the reins from him ahead of the 2022-23 WNBL season as head coach of the UC Capitals.
