She Hoops has teamed up with Basketball NT and the Stars foundation to run an Indigenous Leadership Program in Darwin, the second of three programs that will run over the next 12 months.
Launching the She Hoops Indigenous Leadership Program in Darwin, 30 girls aged 14-17 were in attendance with Abby Cubillo and Lauren Jackson.
The day kicked off with Abby, a professional basketball player and proud Larrikia woman, guiding the girls through workshops on leadership, goal setting, effective communication, and cultural sharing.
Following the workshops, the girls joined Abby and Lauren on court, where they learned the fundamentals of the game and progressed into gameplay.
The introduction of an Indigenous Leadership program is another step in the greater vision of She Hoops in providing accessible and inclusive workshops.
Lauren Jackson AO OLY passion for the game, increasing girls’ participation and reducing barriers for communities across Australia is apparent.
“She Hoops is about empowering and encouraging women and girls in basketball to get involved and stay involved in all areas of the sport, “Said Jackson.
“Being able to get out into different communities and talk to the girls, work with the girls on court while Abby Cubillo leads and mentors the girls off the court is a real privilege and I feel so proud to be a part of something that is impacting young people’s lives like this.
“It’s so special to be able to deliver this program to different communities and I just want to say thank you to the Bibbulmun Fund, a Fund of the Fremantle Foundation for giving us the opportunity take the program around Australia with WNBL player Abby Cubillo leading it and providing inspiration to numbers of Indigenous girls around Australia.
“She is making an incredible impact.”
