She Hoops is proud to announce the opening of applications for the She Hoops Leadership and Confidence Scholarship on June 3rd.
This groundbreaking scholarship program aims to empower young female basketballers by providing them with the skills and qualifications necessary to excel both on and off the court.
A highlight of this scholarship is the unparalleled opportunity for recipients to be mentored by some of the best basketball players in Australia.
WNBL stars and Australian Opals, including Tess Madgen, Kristy Wallace, Nyadiew Puoch, Abby Cubillo, and Steph Reid, will guide and inspire participants throughout the program. Their mentorship offers invaluable insights and experiences, making this scholarship truly exceptional.
The fully-funded scholarship will focus on developing resilience, mindset, confidence, and leadership. In collaboration with EQ Minds, the program will also include Community and Club coaching accreditations and an introductory officiating course.
Federal Minister for Sport, the Hon Anika Wells MP, officially launched the scholarship program in November 2023, commending She Hoops for creating tangible development and mentorship opportunities for young women.
“She Hoops is a crucial resource for developing our next female leaders on and off the court, so we have more Lauren Jacksons and more Abby Cubillos,” said Minister Wells. “Women’s sport is growing rapidly, and the Albanese Government is committed to ensuring there are more females in leadership roles. Put simply, we need more women making decisions for more women.”
Lauren Jackson, a legend in women’s basketball, expressed her enthusiasm for the new program.
“She Hoops is my passion. Being able to spend so much time with young girls all over Australia has been such a highlight for me. To be able to provide scholarships has been the ultimate dream. I know what these girls are capable of, and now they have an incredible opportunity to become the leaders of the future.”
Recipients will also participate in a three-day camp at the Australian Institute of Sport, enhancing their skills and building strong connections within the basketball community.
Abby Cubillo, WNBL player and mentor, shared her excitement about the program.
“I feel super honored to be a mentor. To be identified by people like LJ (Jackson) to give guidance and advice to the younger generation and share my own journey is special, and I’m excited to be part of it. The idea of the scholarship being a holistic program, and not just basketball, with leadership and confidence components, is so important for young girls. The resources and connections to the athletes are something I wish I had access to growing up in Darwin.”
The She Hoops Leadership & Confidence Scholarship provides a transformative experience, equipping young women with the mindset, skills, and confidence to excel in life and basketball.
This program is a unique opportunity for participants to grow as leaders and make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.
